We offer exciting career perspectives in senior care and invite you to become part of our motivated team. In this job portrait, we would like to introduce you to Mr. Sven Koppehel, facility manager at Domicil-Seniorenpflegeheim Baumschulenweg in Berlin-Treptow. Mr. Koppehel grew up in the GDR and actually planned to become a vet. But after the fall of the Berlin Wall, when everything was a bit difficult, his mother-in-law approached him and asked if he would like to start working in a nursing home. So he decided to join as a care assistant and start his career in nursing. Read more about his work in a warm and inspiring environment here.
The passion for working with people
Mr. Koppehel has always been interested in working with people. He appreciates the interaction with his colleagues and was therefore promoted to a management position as a care service manager at an early stage. He has never regretted working at Domicil. The team plays a very important role for him. He is convinced that it is particularly important to listen to others.
"In the constant conversations that take place with colleagues on a daily basis, a lot of private matters are also exchanged. And that simply gives you a feeling for the employees."
From these conversations and his own observations and findings, Mr. Koppehel tries to deduce what potential lies within the employees in order to promote and develop them in a targeted manner. It is important to him that the nursing staff have their hearts in the right place. When looking for new employees, the main focus is on the desire to provide care. It's about engaging with the residents, providing them with the best possible care, and making them happy. Sven Koppehel attaches great importance to ensuring that every member of staff cares for the residents with warmth and empathy.
The role of the director of the facility
As director of the facility, Mr. Koppehel holds the top management position at Domicil-Seniorenpflegeheim Baumschulenweg. This puts him in charge of a large, medium-sized company with a high turnover and a great deal of responsibility for staff. He has overall responsibility for the quality of care at his facility. As the top manager of his facility, he is also responsible for the apprenticeship, further education and training of his staff in order to ensure the best possible care and promote the individual development of employees. He is also the point of contact for the entire team and supports them with all questions and problems.
The challenges of day-to-day nursing care
Everyday care brings with it many challenges. Mr. Koppehel and his team are faced with the task of recognizing residents' individual needs and meeting them in the best possible way. This is not just about physical care but also about psychological support and maintaining quality of life. Staff must be flexible and resourceful in order to respond to the different needs of the residents.
For Mr. Koppehel, the motivation behind his work is clear: he wants to enable the residents to lead happy and fulfilling lives. He enjoys seeing his staff get involved and have a positive impact on the residents. The gratitude of the residents and their satisfaction are the greatest reward for him and his team.
Empathy and communication are, therefore, essential nursing skills for Mr. Koppehel. Through empathetic conversations and an open ear for the concerns of residents and staff alike, fears and worries can be alleviated. At the same time, good communication within the team is essential to ensuring smooth processes and achieving goals together.
The future of nursing care
Mr. Koppehel is optimistic about the future of nursing care. He sees an increasing demand for qualified nursing staff and hopes that the appreciation of the nursing profession and the interest of future generations in this fulfilling and meaningful profession will continue to grow. At the same time, he emphasizes the need for good training and regular further training in order to meet the demands of the profession. Together, we can enrich the lives of our residents and bring a smile to their faces.
"Yes, we're actually just looking for anyone who has a passion for care, in other words, who has a desire to engage with residents, look after them well, and make the residents happy. Here in the house."
